The present study aimed at investigating the influences of drying air temperature and flow rate on energy parameters and dehydration behaviour of apple slices. For this purpose, apple slices were dried in a convective dryer at air temperatures of 50, 60 and 70 °C, and air velocities of 1, 1.5 and 2 m s -1. Dehydration rate increased as the air temperature and flow rate increased from 50 to 70 °C and 1 to 2 m s -1 , respectively. The effective moisture diffusivity was determined to be in the range of 6.75×10 . Results of data analysis showed that the maximum energy consumption (23.94 kW h) belonged to 50 °C and 2 m s -1 and the minimum (13.89 kW h) belonged to 70 °C and 1 m s -1 treatment. Energy efficiency values were in the range of 2.87-9.11%. Moreover, the results indicated that any increment in the air temperature increases thermal and drying efficiencies while any increment in the air flow rate decreases both of them.Keywords: apple; moisture diffusion; thermodynamic parameters; energy efficiency.Practical Application: Traditional drying methods pose some problems such as long drying time and dust and microbial contamination of the dried materials. Artificial drying methods should be employed to overcome these problems. In spite of some advantages for industrial dryers, energy requirement in drying technology is one of the key problems to overcome. The drying process generally consumes large amounts of energy; therefore, it is crucial to make sure of high energy efficiency and low environmental impact in this process.

In this communication, an attempt has been made to evaluate the performance of mixed mode dryer consists of PVT air collectors and wooden made drying chamber with load condition. Based on energy balances of PVT air collectors and conventional collector, an expression for outlet air temperature of PVT air collector has been derived. Further by using the rate of thermal energy available from PVT air collector, an analytical expression for crop temperatures has also been derived in terms of design and climatic parameters of New Delhi and experimentally validated. The validation of analytical model has been carried out for cauliflower with thin layer drying for last day of drying with reasonable assumptions. It has been observed that the drying time for a half kilogram of cauliflower is achieved in 21 hours due to larger size of the samples. The annual overall thermal energy and exergy were 396.48 kWh and 46.52 kWh respectively. The energy payback time (EPBT) was increased from 3.17 years on thermal energy basis to 27.03 years on exergy basis for mixed mode dryer. The energy production factor and life cycle conversion efficiency were found to be smaller on exergy basis compared to thermal energy basis. For a life time of 30 year the carbon credits earned on overall thermal energy basis was $ 727.9 and on overall exergy basis it was $ 85.5.

Resumen-El secador de túnel tipo Hohenheim fué desarrollado en la Universidad de Hohenheim (Alemania) a mediados de los años 1980. Gracias a su facilidad de construcción y operación este secador ha sido usado de manera exitosa para el secado de gran variedad de productos agrícolas en países ubicados en zonas tropicales. El presente artículo presenta una revisión bibliográfica de trabajos experimentales publicados sobre la implementación de estos secadores. Se presentan las características principales del secador en relación a sus componentes, su configuración geométrica y materiales así como las modificaciones realizadas al diseño original. Así mismo, se presentan los parámetros de operación utilizados en el secado de una gran variedad de productos agrícolas y los valores de eficiencia para el secador y sus componentes individuales. Los valores reportados se organizan de manera tabular con el propósito de facilitar la comparación y evaluación del desempeño de estos secadores en diferentes productos agrícolas.La información presentada constituye una herramienta para la planeación y diseño de nuevos secadores de este tipo y para la evaluación del desempeño térmico de secadores existentes.
