Solid-state electromechanical smart material actuators are versatile as they permit diverse shapes and designs and can exhibit different actuation modes. An important advantage of these actuators compared to conventional ones is that they can be easily miniaturized to a sub-millimeter scale. In recent years, there has been a great surge in novel liquid pumps operated by these smart material actuators. These devices create opportunities for applications in fields ranging from aerospace and robotics to the biomedical and drug delivery industries. Although these have mainly been prototypes, a few products have already entered the market. To assist in the further development of this research track, we provide a taxonomy of the electromechanical smart material actuators available, and subsequently focus on the ones that have been utilized for operating pumps. The latter includes unidirectional shape memory alloy-, piezoelectric ceramic-, ferroelectric polymer-, dielectric elastomer-, ionic polymer metal composite- and conducting polymer-based actuators. Their properties are reviewed in the context of engineering pumps and summarized in comprehensive tables. Given the diverse requirements of pumps, these varied smart materials and their actuators offer exciting possibilities for designing and constructing devices for a wide array of applications.

Peristaltic pumps are widely used in biomedical applications to ensure the safe flow of sterile or medical fluids. They are commonly employed for drug injections, IV fluids, and blood separation (apheresis). These pumps operate through a progressive contraction or expansion along a flexible tube, enabling fluid flow. They are also utilized in industrial applications for sanitary fluid transport, corrosive fluid handling, and novel pharmacological delivery systems. This research provides valuable insights into the selection and optimal design of the powertrain stages for peristaltic pumps implemented in drug delivery systems. The focus of this paper lies in the simulation and optimization of the performance of a power transmission gearbox by examining the energy consumption, sound levels, reliability, and volume as output metrics. The components of the powertrain consist of a helical gear pair for the first stage, a bevel gear pair for the second one, and finally a planetary transmission. Through extensive simulations, the model exhibits promising results, achieving an efficiency of up to 90%. Furthermore, alternative configurations were investigated to optimize the overall performance of the powertrain. This process has been simulated by employing the KISSsoft/KISSsys software package. The findings of this investigation contribute to advancements in the field of biomedical engineering and hold significant potential for improving the efficiency, reliability, and performance of drug delivery mechanisms.

The emerging field of flexible tactile sensing systems, equipped with multi-physical tactile sensing capabilities, holds vast potential across diverse domains such as medical monitoring, robotics, and human–computer interaction. In response to the prevailing challenges associated with the limited integration and sensitivity of flexible tactile sensors, this paper introduces a versatile tactile sensing system capable of concurrently monitoring temperature and pressure. The temperature sensor employs carbon nanotube/graphene conductive paste as its sensitive material, while the pressure sensor integrates an ionic gel containing boron nitride as its sensitive layer. Through the application of cost-effective screen printing technology, we have successfully manufactured a flexible dual-mode sensor with exceptional performance, featuring high sensitivity (804.27 kPa−1), a broad response range (50 kPa), rapid response time (17 ms), and relaxation time (34 ms), alongside exceptional durability over 5000 cycles. Furthermore, the resistance temperature coefficient of the sensor within the temperature range of 12.5 °C to 93.7 °C is −0.17% °C−1. The designed flexible dual-mode tactile sensing system enables the real-time detection of pressure and temperature information, presenting an innovative approach to electronic skin with multi-physical tactile sensing capabilities.
