The investigation into new sources of energy with the highest efficiency which are derived from existing energy sources is a significant research area and is attracting a great deal of interest. Radio frequency (RF) energy harvesting is a promising alternative for obtaining energy for wireless devices directly from RF energy sources in the environment. An overview of the energy harvesting concept will be discussed in detail in this paper. Energy harvesting is a very promising method for the development of self-powered electronics. Many applications, such as the Internet of Things (IoT), smart environments, the military or agricultural monitoring depend on the use of sensor networks which require a large variety of small and scattered devices. The low-power operation of such distributed devices requires wireless energy to be obtained from their surroundings in order to achieve safe, self-sufficient and maintenance-free systems. The energy harvesting circuit is known to be an interface between piezoelectric and electro-strictive loads. A modern view of circuitry for energy harvesting is based on power conditioning principles that also involve AC-to-DC conversion and voltage regulation. Throughout the field of energy conversion, energy harvesting circuits often impose electric boundaries for devices, which are important for maximizing the energy that is harvested. The power conversion efficiency (PCE) is described as the ratio between the rectifier’s output DC power and the antenna-based RF-input power (before its passage through the corresponding network).

Electromagnetic (EM) RF (radio frequency) energy harvesting in dynamic ambient environments is a challenge for conventional energy harvesting systems such as rectennas. The main challenges are the low efficiency of the collector and low ambient power levels, which makes it hard to consider in industrial applications. Several research works have focused on the design of high-efficiency antennas to achieve an efficient and maximum possible level of RF EM energy harvesting. Their main objective is to improve the EM energy harvesting system by overcoming the low efficiency of the collector, which is the main part of the rectenna system. In this work, we propose and investigate a methodology in terms of EM energy harvesting based on the concentration and focusing of EM energy in a small zone where it can be easily collected and transferred indirectly to the rectenna system. It consists of a focusing device and a methodology to associate the latter with existing RF energy harvesting systems. We demonstrate a focusing metasurface design implemented alongside an off-the-shelf rectenna device at 900 MHz, where an enhanced energy harvested power level up to a linear gain of 8 is achieved compared to the case when only the rectenna is used. Numerical results as well as measurements results in an anechoic chamber are shown. Experimental power received levels are given both in the focusing plane and in time for the validation of the concept.

Wireless energy harvesting, a technique to generate direct current (DC) electricity from ambient wireless signals, has recently been featured as a potential solution to reduce the battery size, extend the battery life, or replace batteries altogether for wearable electronics. Unlike other energy harvesting techniques, wireless energy harvesting has a prominent advantage of ceaseless availability of ambient signals, but the common form of technology involves a major challenge of limited output power because of a relatively low ambient energy density. Moreover, the archetypal wireless energy harvesters are made of printed circuit boards (PCBs), which are rigid, bulky, and heavy, and hence they are not eminently suitable for body-worn applications from both aesthetic and comfort points of view. In order to overcome these limitations, textile-based wireless energy harvesting architectures have been proposed in the past decade. Being made of textile materials, this new class of harvesters can be seamlessly integrated into clothing in inherently aesthetic and comfortable forms. In addition, since clothing offers a large surface area, multiple harvesting units can be deployed to enhance the output power. In view of these unique and irreplaceable benefits, this paper reviews key recent progress in textile-based wireless energy harvesting strategies for powering body-worn electronics. Comparisons with other power harvesting technologies, historical development, fundamental principles of operation and techniques for fabricating textile-based wireless power harvesters are first recapitulated, followed by a review on the principal advantages, challenges, and opportunities. It is one of the purposes of this paper to peruse the current state-of-the-art and build a scientific knowledge base to aid further advancement of power solutions for wearable electronics.
