A review on diamond-like carbon-based films for space tribology

Abstract: Space solid lubricants should undergo serious tests, such as high pressure, high vacuum, strong radiations and so on. Diamond-like carbon (DLC) films show potential applications in space because of low friction in vacuum. However, the short sliding lifetime should be a critical issue, and many methods are used to improve it. This paper highlights the development and broad potential of DLC films with special structures used in vacuum. The frictional behaviours of DLC-based films in other space conditions, such … Show more

“…The different type of chemical structure can be obtained by using different types of deposition technique. To convert the carbon into sp 3 hybridization phase, high energy vacuum deposition processes are required, the use of different energy intensity results in the formation of different carbonaceous structure (Shi et al 2022) [103]. The low energy process like magnetron sputtering forms film closer to sp 2 structure carbon film, which is also referred as a-C amorphous film.…”

“…The space industry has great economic and scientific value (Orleanski, 2019), but high returns come with high risks. Space equipment is affected by many dangerous factors such as vacuum, cryogenic and radiation in space (Shi et al , 2022); the vacuum environment is a factor that cannot be ignored in the development of space equipment. To ensure the smooth implementation of space projects, it is necessary to conduct environmental simulation tests on the ground for each part or the whole space equipment, and the test indicators involve many aspects such as mechanical properties, material properties and electronic circuit stability (Ding et al , 2022).…”

“…Among the technologies which have been used to fabricate the F-DLC coating, the plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PECVD) is more popular than other methods, since the properties of the coating can be adjusted by changing the process parameters such as power, gas flow rate and chemical composition of the precursor. Moreover, it is versatile technology for scaling up the process for industrial applications from selfcleaning windows to solar cell components [22].…”
