“…Epeiric (or epicontinental) seas and their deposits are an important archive of Earth history because the interiors of stable cratons were frequently flooded in the geologic past. These craton‐interior seas may have differed substantially in their chemistry and hydrographic properties compared to the open ocean, with potentially dramatic effects on our ability to reconstruct the biogeochemical history of the open oceans from sedimentary strata deposited in inland seas (e.g., Allison & Wells, 2006; Algeo et al., 2008; Gilleaudeau & Kah, 2013a, 2013b, 2015; Holmden et al., 1998; Panchuk et al., 2005, 2006; Schwarz et al., 2022).
