A Review on Comparison of Tooth Size Discrepancies among Angle\'s Class I, II, and III Malocclusion: Is There a Significance?

Abstract: Aim:The contemporary article aims to review and compare various literatures concerning different conclusions regarding the correlation between tooth size discrepancy (TSD) and Angle's malocclusion groups. Background: Acquiring the ideal occlusion plays one of the major roles while designing the treatment plan for an orthodontic patient, any alterations in the individual tooth sizes are called TSD and will hinder this prime requirement. By determining the correct tooth size ratio, it further helps in acquiring … Show more

“…The result of the study shows the anterior and overall Bolton ratio through class I, II and III too, where no significant difference had been observed, this result was similar to study done by and Al-Khateeb & Abu Alhaija 24 , Jabri et al, 25 in Nanjing, China, Endo et al, 26 among a Japanese peoples and Basaran et al, 27 observed no considerable difference for both ratios between the groups of malocclusion, which are in disagreement with the results of Wędrychowska-Szulc et al, 13 that revealed significant differences of anterior and overall Bolton ratio among malocclusion classes for males and females, Othman and Harradine 28 and Nie and lin 29 showed the same result.…”

“…The method of assessing tooth-size discrepancies proposed by Bolton 17 was adopted for the current study due to its accuracy and long-standing acceptance by the dental profession. 4 It is possible that conventional plaster casts may not accurately reproduce exact tooth size, which is a likely limitation of this study. Nevertheless, carefully prepared impressions and plaster casts should have negligible size errors.…”

“…A TSD contributes to an altered relationship between the dental arches because accepted overbite, overjet and interdigitation require a certain proportional size relationship between the teeth. 3,4 Successful orthodontic treatment with regard to a functional and aesthetic occlusion also, in part, depends on an accurate TSD diagnosis and intervention. 1,2 REIS, MARAÑÓN-VÁSQUEZ, MATSUMOTO, BARATTO-FILHO, SASSO STUANI, PROFF, KIRSCHNECK AND KÜCHLER Tooth size is determined at the commencement of the dental development stage.…”
