A Review on Back-to-Back Converters in Permanent Magnet Synchronous Generator based Wind Energy Conversion System

Abstract: This paper presents a review on the application of back-to-back converters in the field of Permanent Magnet Synchronous Generator (PMSG) based Wind Energy Conversion Systems (WECS). The wide applications of the back-to-back converters are power conditioning devices, micro grid, High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC), Renewable energy systems. The intention is to present an overview about the design considerations taken by various researchers in back-to-back converters in the field of Wind Energy Conversion Systems… Show more

“…The PMSG has the advantage of higher efficiency, higher reliability, higher energy density, low torque ripple, lower maintenance cost, and low operational speed. And it overcomes the problems like failures of the gearbox, higher maintenance cost, excessive noise, and vibrations associated with other wind energy models (Badoni and Prakash, 2014; Senthilnathan and Annapoorani, 2016a). Koumba et al (2017) all discussed about the implementation of PMSG based wind energy conversion systems for the isolated electrical network with voltage control based using space vector pulse width modulation for three level converter with internal current control.…”

“…Back-to-back converters (Nasiri et al, 2015; Senthilnathan and Annapoorani, 2016a) are connected through a common DC link capacitor, which enables the system to manipulate proper power balance and power flow (Zhang et al, 2015). In conventional configuration of back-to-back converters, the front end has single input.…”
