A review on aerogel: 3D nanoporous structured fillers in polymer‐based nanocomposites

Abstract: There have been a number of review papers on layered silicate and carbon nanotube reinforced polymer nanocomposites, in which the fillers have high aspect ratios. Particulate‐polymer nanocomposites containing aerogel with extremely low density, large open pores, and high surface area are also an important class of polymer nanocomposites. Thus, this article provides an overview on the effect of aerogel on mechanical and thermal properties of polymer‐based nanocomposites. Moreover, the preparation, history, clas… Show more

“…24 High specific mechanical properties and multifunctional characteristics of the aerogel/polymer nanocomposites make them desirable in various applications such as energy dissipating/absorbing, thermal and acoustical insulation, flame retardancy, and so forth. 25 Furthermore, combining electrospinning and 3D printing technology to produce patterned scaffold consisting oriented and random nanofibers are an area of recent interest. In contrast to conventional electrospinning, the new method enables precise patterning of electrospun polymer fibers into scalable, 3D scaffolds.…”

“…In addition to two main polymers, there is also the possibility of adding some fillers with specific functionalities during the spinning process. A common idea in C/S bicomponent composite fibers is to use nanomaterials for giving special properties, i.e., antibacterial, conductivity, and flame retardancy …”
