A Review on Advances in Pruning to Vegetable Crops

Abstract: These are typically shoots or branches, but sometimes buds, flowers, fruit or roots are removed as well. Objective of pruningTo remove the non-productive parts in order to divert the energy into those parts that is capable of bearing fruits. Maintain the proper proportion of root: shoot ratio.Better quality of fruits by better light penetration.Dry matter distribution is primarily regulated by the sink-strength of the various organs. When the available assimilates equal or exceed the total sink strength of the… Show more

“…Such a general positive response of dry mass accumulation of sweet pepper plants due to pruning system might be attributed to dry matter distribution is primarily regulated by the sinkstrength of the various organs. Thakur et al, (2018) stated that when the available assimilates equal or exceed the total sink strength of the plant, the growth rates of the vegetative parts and the individual fruit occur at the potential rates. However, when the amount of available assimilates is less than the total sink strength, the assimilates are distributed between roots, leaves, stem, and fruit according to their individual sink strengths relative to the total sink strength.…”

“…There are several well-established low-cost strategies reported throughout the world to enhance the productivity of different agri-horticultural crops. Among them, the application of micronutrients, intercropping, adaptation of a high-density planting (HDP) system, drip irrigation, scientific training and pruning technique, and use of different plant growth regulators play a major role to enhance the productivity of different crops, particularly perennial crops (Thakur et al 2018;Lipton 2012). But the major concern is the sustainability of all these techniques in the long term.…”

“…In this practice, pruning parts of the plants like non–productive shoots, diseased leaves, and fruits are removed to regulate canopy and minimize photosynthates wastage. Tomato plants can be pruned severely without affecting the tomato yield 7 , 8 . Besides, the application of farmyard manure (FYM) also adds organic matter to the soil, which improves microbial population and enzymatic activities.…”
