A Review of Unmanned System Technologies with Its Application to Aquaculture Farm Monitoring and Management

Abstract: This paper aims to provide an overview of the capabilities of unmanned systems to monitor and manage aquaculture farms that support precision aquaculture using the Internet of Things. The locations of aquaculture farms are diverse, which is a big challenge on accessibility. For offshore fish cages, there is a difficulty and risk in the continuous monitoring considering the presence of waves, water currents, and other underwater environmental factors. Aquaculture farm management and surveillance operations requ… Show more

“…However, navigating and communicating with AUVs underwater can be challenging due to the geography 76 . Additionally, these devices can deteriorate quickly due to the saline environment, weather and water currents 77 . In contrast, UAVs are smaller, lightweight and easy to navigate and communicate; however, they have limited flight time and are prone to wind and other environmental conditions 78 .…”

“…UAVs can significantly reduce cost and labors in the aquaculture industry, thus providing stability in fish form through minimizing farm deaths. In aquaculture, UAVs can be used to capture real-time images on underwater species, observing fish behavior, remote sensing, site surveillance, fish feeding management, and for assessment of the species [113]. UAVs offer enormous benefits for monitoring offshore kelp aquaculture farms.…”
