A review of the use of beeswax in skincare

Abstract: Background Beeswax is a naturally occurring product secreted from worker bees that has varied uses in modern day. In skincare, its function ranges from its role as an occlusive, helping to create a semi‐occlusive skin barrier that minimizes transepidermal water loss; as a humectant, locking in hydration; and an emollient to soften and soothe the skin. “…Віск утворює захисний бар´єр на поверхні рани, певну підтримку, що попереджає розтягування ранових країв. Масляна кислота є природною антимікробною речовиною, що забезпечує мікробну чистоту рани, а мікрокриcтали виступають у ролі базису для формування грануляційної тканини (Bayir et al, 2019;Nong et al, 2023).…”

“…Beewax, a hydrophobic complex of hydrocarbons, esters, fatty acids, and propolis produced by the wax-producing glands of worker bees, may be used as a fatty thickener and rheology modifier in lipsticks and skin moisturizers. Despite its antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant properties, the occlusiveness of this ingredient supports its great potential in clinical trials for psoriasis and atopic dermatitis treatments [66].…”

“…Mango butter contains tocopherols, which reduce wrinkles and roughness of the skin, while its repairing and protecting properties allow it to be used in sensitive skin care products [44]. In addition to its antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant properties, beeswax is generally nonirritating and does not cause acne [46]. In contrast, glycerin increases skin hydration by acting as a humectant and skin protector [49].…”
