Looking through a Prism: A Systematic Review of LGBTQ+ STEM Literature

Research involving lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer, as well as individuals who identify with other gender and sexual minorities (LGBTQ+), make up a small, yet meaningful, amount of published work within science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) literature. This review of LGBTQ+ STEM literature from January 2009 to June 2022 describes the dissemination, theoretical frameworks, and research findings of 139 works to better understand the current trends.LGBTQ+ STEM research and publications have increased in recent years, and the locations in which these works are published continues to grow. Much of the literature is disseminated without the use of an explicit framework. However, when frameworks were included, critical theories were the most common. Findings from this review show that the current climate and culture in STEM leads to exclusionary behavior and marginalization of LGBTQ+ individuals, which can be mitigated through visibility such as including role models, implementing policies to protect LGBTQ+ individuals, and learning more about the intersection of STEM and LGBTQ+ identity. Current trends in LGBTQ+ STEM literature will inspire and inform researchers and allies who aim to improve academia and industry for LGBTQ+ chemists and help create inclusive and welcoming environments.

Despite decades of effort to broaden participation in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM), many fields remain demographically skewed. Marginalized and minoritized people are still underrepresented in and underserved by the sciences. In this paper, the author considers the question, 'How do we improve representation in STEM?' by reflecting on his own journey and themes such as imposter syndrome, decentering, meritocracy, and activism. Importantly, 'underrepresentation' is not a mysterious happenstance but rather a predictable outcome of systemic inequity and systematic exclusion. By attending to the mechanisms of oppression, we can enact interventions that address root causes instead of symptoms. There are multiple ways that our research, teaching, and practice might change 'the system' by making inclusion and equity the focus of our work, applying these principles as a lens for framing research questions and interpreting findings, and adopting methods and practices that are inclusive and equitable.

Students who identify as LGBTQ continue to report feelings of being unsafe at school because of their sexual orientation, gender identity, and gender expression. Access to a gender and sexual diversity (GSD)-inclusive curriculum and supportive teachers may positively improve the school climate forLGBTQ students, but these supports are often not included in STEM classrooms. One response is to ensure that STEM teachers are prepared to integrate GSD-inclusive STEM teaching into their classrooms. This review systematically analyzed the literature on supporting and affirming GSD in K-12 and higher education STEM education contexts. The 81 selected studies were qualitatively analyzed using inductive thematic analysis and epistemic network analysis, and the findings showed that GSD-inclusive STEM education literature coheres around six highly related constructs: Hetero-
