A Review of the Literature in Applied and Specialised Kinesiology

Abstract: Introduction: Kinesiology is a diagnostic, therapeutic complementary therapy utilising subtle change in manual muscle testing results to evaluate the body’s energetic balance and select healing modalities. Anecdotal evidence suggests kinesiology is helpful, therefore we wished to critically review the literature. Aims: (1) To ascertain if diagnostic accuracy including inter-examiner reliability has been established. (2) To review whether there is evidence for its therapeutic effectiveness. (3) To critically as… Show more

“…Anecdotal evidence suggests that PKP is a clinically helpful therapy; however our recent systematic literature review concluded that the quality of the literature in this field was very poor and with insufficient evidence to ascertain if kinesiology of any type had a specific therapeutic effect for any condition [10]. Our aim was to conduct a pragmatic feasibility trial to determine if there was any evidence for the clinical effectiveness and efficacy of PKP in chronic low back pain initially as a whole complex system as suggested by the Medical Research Council (MRC) guidelines [11] rather than make an initial attempt to dissect its component efficacy.…”

“…These systems became known collectively as 'specialised' or 'energy' kine siology. In our review of the kinesiology literature [2] we concluded that there was insufficient evidence for us to ascertain if kinesiology had any specific therapeutic effect for any condition. However, anecdotal evidence suggests that kinesiology is a clinically helpful therapy and we wanted to understand if this system was of any specific clinical value.…”
