“…New high-resolution satellite observing capabilities showed that very sharp SST gradients, with a few • C contrast over kilometre-scale ranges or less are probably as ubiquitous as oceanic sub-mesoscale processes both in the open ocean and in coastal waters. They can be generated by baroclinic instabilities on the edge of large-scale currents like the Gulf Stream (Gula et al, 2014) or the Agulhas (Krug et al, 2017), by flow instabilities along the continental slope or on the shelf (Petrenko et al, 2017;Rascle et al, 2017) or by local atmospheric forcing like upwelling systems (Meunier et al, 2012). These processes can be reproduced by oceanic numerical simulations and show typical life spans from 10 h to a few days (Capet et al, 2008;Gula et al, 2014).…”

“…Several satellite datasets were exploited during the campaign to guide the cruise through an adaptive sampling strategy using the SPASSO software package (http://www.mio.univ-amu.fr/SPASSO/) following the same approach of previous cruises such as LATEX (Doglioli, 2013;Petrenko et al, 2017) and KEOPS2 (d 'Ovidio et al, 2015). SPASSO was also used after the cruise in order to extend the spatial and temporal vision of the in situ observations.…”

“…To locate these three stations, we used a Lagrangian strategy developed during previous cruises such as LATEX (Doglioli et al, 2013;Petrenko et al, 2017) andKEOPS2 (d'Ovidio et al, 2015). Briefly, the regions of interest along the vessel route were first characterized at large scale through the analysis of satellite data.…”
