“…This is slightly lower than the report of a prevalence of irritable bowel symptoms of 30% in Northern Sweden [6], yet higher than most reports on the prevalence of IBS: A European telephone survey of more than 40,000 subjects found a prevalence of IBS of 11.5% [37], and a Norwegian study reported a prevalence of 8.4% [38]. Reviews of this field mostly report an IBS prevalence of 10-15% [39][40][41] in the West, and a lower prevalence in China and other Eastern Asian countries [42]. IBS prevalence estimates also vary with the criteria used for diagnosis [43].…”

“…Prevalence estimates for IBS appear to vary widely according to the criteria used and population studied[3]. The reported prevalence of IBS in Western countries ranges from 17%-22%[4]; but a highly variable range between 2.3%-34% is reported in Asian countries[5,6]. In China, most studies applying the Rome II criteria reported the IBS prevalence in adult as between 5% to 10%[7].…”
