A review of the genus Leiurus Ehrenberg, 1828 (Scorpiones: Buthidae) with description of four new species from the Arabian Peninsula

Abstract: Euscorpius is the first research publication completely devoted to scorpions (Arachnida: Scorpiones). Euscorpius takes advantage of the rapidly evolving medium of quick online publication, at the same time maintaining high research standards for the burgeoning field of scorpion science (scorpiology). Euscorpius is an expedient and viable medium for the publication of serious papers in scorpiology, including (but not limited to): systematics, evolution, ecology, biogeography, and general biology of scorpions. “…It is possible that this area offers unique environmental conditions that favor this species. Another buthid scorpion, Leiurus heberti Lowe, Yagmur et Kovařík, 2014, also appears to be localized to the region of Jabal Samhan, while a related species, L. haenggii Lowe, Yagmur et Kovařík, 2014 occurs in surrounding areas (Lowe et al, 2014). A highly gravid female was found during daytime at the base of a larger tree in a small hollow under a stone, where conditions were more humid and cooler.…”

“…The Compsobuthus lobes differ significantly from the lobes of some other Buthus group genera. For example, the broad, robust basal lobe of Compsobuthus contrasts with the smaller basal lobes of Androctonus, Apistobuthus, Buthacus, Hottentotta, Leiurus, Odontobuthus and Vachoniolus (Levy & Amitai, 1980;Lowe, 2009aLowe, , 2010aLowe, , 2010bLowe, , 2010cLowe et al, 2014;Vachon, 1949Vachon, , 1952Vachon, , 1958Vachon & Stock- mann, 1968). These consistent differences support the usefulness of hemispermatophore characters in the genus level taxonomy of buthids .…”
