A Review of the Evaluation, Control, and Application Technologies for Drill String Vibrations and Shocks in Oil and Gas Well

Abstract: Drill string vibrations and shocks (V&S) can limit the optimization of drilling performance, which is a key problem for trajectory optimizing, wellbore design, increasing drill tools life, rate of penetration, and intelligent drilling. The directional wells and other special trajectory drilling technologies are often used in deep water, deep well, hard rock, and brittle shale formations. In drilling these complex wells, the cost caused by V&S increases. According to past theories, indoor experiments, a… Show more

“…Drill bit trajectory is an important characteristic of drilling engineering, which has a close relationship with ROP and borehole quality. However, there is little research about this aspect [1][2][3][7][8][9]14,[17][18][19]. A typical 3D bit trajectory of PRD is presented in Figure 26a, which based on the model of PRD, as shown in Table 3.…”

“…A clear contradiction between previous studies' measures was encountered. Suppressing drill bit and drill string vibration increase the ROP [1,2,22], and applied vibration and shock loads of the bit and drill string increase the ROP, such as in PRD and percussive drilling without RPM [3,4,15]. From an energy point of view, the energy of a drill bit and drilling system was transmitted to the wellbore by lateral vibration.…”

“…Since drilling is the process of cutting rock by chipping or crushing, vibrations are almost unavoidable [19]. The downhole vibration is measured, monitored, and recorded in tool electronics sensors placed in the drilling assembly, and reported as root-mean-square in the unit of acceleration with gravity so that the field technicians could comprehend it and analyze the underground condition [4,20].…”

“…Torsional vibration, also called slick-slip vibration, is the alternating phenomenon of rotational acceleration and deceleration [9]. Torsional vibration is found in the frequency of 0.1 Hz-5 Hz [19]. Torsional vibration exists in the rotary path of drilling string axis, and can be observed as the variation in downhole rotation per minute [4,9,28].…”
