Involving the community is a way of protecting the environment. The area of Mount Gede Pangrango is a tourist destination for people from Jakarta and its surroundings. Changes in land use happen rapidly, as well as deforestation of hills. Community participation to reforest the hills is one of the ways that is carried out in community service activities. Based on the characteristics of the community, the purpose of this study is to evaluate the procedures of community participation in planting bamboo and vetiver at the slopes of Mount Gede Pangrango. The method of collecting data is by observing and interviewing various stakeholders. The community that gets involved come from various backgrounds and intentions. The analysis shows that the most important stage in community participation is in action planning. At this stage, the community leader is an important position. According to the community, the less important phase was evaluating the activities results. In this stage, the organizer could complete the stage by itself. The conclusion of this study shows that the backgrounds of the community leaders and the community members are keys to the program. A direct economic benefit could strengthen community participation. The community will not offer their support unless the program offers benefits of economic profit.

How Does Proximity Affect the Dual Innovation of Alliance Partner? The Role of Knowledge Coupling

Recent work on alliance partner selection focuses on the relationship between partner features and alliance performance, while ignoring the influence mechanism of alliance partner features on different innovation types of firms. In this paper, based on proximity perspective, the influence mechanism model of alliance partner features on firms' dual innovation is constructed. Analyzing questionnaires and patent data of high-tech firms, it is found that (1) Technological proximity (TP) has a positive impact on focal firms' exploratory innovation (EXR) and exploitative innovation (EXI); (2) Knowledge coupling (KC) mediates the relationship between TP and dual innovation; (3) Social proximity (SP) positively moderates the relationship between TP and dual innovation, and positively moderates the relationship between TP and KC; Meanwhile, (4) there is a moderating effect of different levels of SP on the magnitude of the mediating effect of KC. By constructing a theoretical framework based on "proximity --knowledge coupling --dual innovation", this paper is helpful to draw scholars' attention to the relationship between proximity and dual innovation, and provide theoretical reference for firms to select alliance partners reasonably and efficiently.

Purpose The notion of tacit knowledge is mostly discussed with regard to experts’ knowledge (Sternberg et al., 1995). It is less discussed in the context of interpersonal interactions, which are very common in organizations and in certain occupations (e.g. negotiations and therapy). The limited reference to this aspect is due to the lack of appropriate methodologies. This study aims to deal with this lacuna; specifically, how to elicit tacit knowledge in professions based on interpersonal interactions. Design/methodology/approach A case study was chosen to demonstrate the use of symbolic interaction key concepts (Goffman, 1959) as a method to evoke tacit knowledge. The information was gathered from interviews conducted among 20 business negotiation experts. The “onion” model (Asher and Popper, 2019) was used as a tool to analyze various layers of tacit knowledge. Findings The suggested framework enabled the exploration and characterization of tacit knowledge in professions based on interpersonal interaction, which would not have otherwise emerged. Practical implications As interpersonal interaction is a complex and abstract occurrence, the authors propose a conceptual framework (symbolic interaction), which allows for the characterization of such occurrences and a tool (the “onion” model) that allows for the classification of the elicited tacit knowledge. Originality/value The study suggests an original framework, which enables the identification and analysis of tacit knowledge in a context that is very common in organizations but is, yet, partially explored – personal interactions. The use of the suggested framework can possibly bridge the gap between unconscious personal learning and knowledge that can be used at the organizational level.
