A Review of Successes and Impeding Challenges of IoT-Based Insect Pest Detection Systems for Estimating Agroecosystem Health and Productivity of Cotton

Abstract: Using artificial intelligence (AI) and the IoT (Internet of Things) is a primary focus of applied engineering research to improve agricultural efficiency. This review paper summarizes the engagement of artificial intelligence models and IoT techniques in detecting, classifying, and counting cotton insect pests and corresponding beneficial insects. The effectiveness and limitations of AI and IoT techniques in various cotton agricultural settings were comprehensively reviewed. This review indicates that insects … Show more

“…To improve pest management, ANN and remote sensing data for cotton [32] detected Cotton Bollworms with 87% accuracy. Last, tomatoes [33] showed 98.3% accuracy in the YOLOv3 model in Early Blight diagnosis, avoiding disease spread and lowering losses. These developments demonstrate how AI transforms agriculture, fosters effective crop production, and reduces dependency on hazardous pesticides.AI offers hope for a resilient and fruitful future in international agriculture [37].…”

“…Such sensors gather vital data, namely soil moisture, temperature, humidity, and the images of crops along with the surrounding vegetation. With real-time data analytics and processing techniques, the system rapidly identifies the pest outbreaks and immediately alerts the agricultural experts or farmers, thus allowing them to proceed with timely and targeted pest management measures [2]. This combination of the IoT and pest classification techniques has the potential to revolutionize pest control in agriculture, causing more sustained practices, decreased pesticide use, and, ultimately, maximum crop yields.…”
