A review of structural health monitoring of bonded structures using electromechanical impedance spectroscopy

Abstract: The article presents a literature review of electromechanical impedance spectroscopy for structural health monitoring, with emphasis in adhesively bonded joints. The concept behind electromechanical impedance spectroscopy is to use variable high-frequency structural vibrations with piezoelectric elements to monitor the local area of a structure for changes in mechanical impedance that may indicate imminent damage. Various mathematical models that correlate the structural impedance with the electric response of… Show more

“…In the past decades, the emergence of electrical inverse methods has also proven a viable approach to static condition monitoring [133,134]. This family of inversion-based modalities generally uses three different data sources, including capacitative, direct current and alternating current-based measurements.…”

“…The most used are the visual, or optical, liquid penetrant, magnetic particle, electromagnetic, radiographic, and ultrasonic testing methods. 5,17 Out of all NDT techniques, the ultrasonic, more specifically, the LW-based ultrasonic method, revealed large possibilities of application in cutting-edge industries, namely, in the aeronautical field. This is largely due to the fact that airplanes contain thin and large areas and, thus, the ultrasonic waves can potentially analyze entire structures.…”

“…The transducers are connected to multichannel EMI device with TiePie Handyscope HS5 and an PiezoDrive PD200 amplifier. From the EMI literature, it is apparent that the considered frequency range is dependent on the particular EMI application (Tenreiro et al, 2021). The range from 25 to 500 kHz considered here contains the frequencies that are also relevant in other similar studies (Lim et al, 2021; Mueller, 2017; Neuschwander et al, 2019; Soman et al, 2020).…”
