A review of spatial-explicit factors determining spatial distribution of land use/land-use change

Abstract: Land development is necessary for human progress, but its impact has resulted in the degradation of ecosystem services not only locally and regionally, but globally as well. Human behavior toward land use/land-use change (LULUC) must be examined and fully understood in order to achieve better land management. Several studies were recently conducted on LULUC patterns, suggesting a relationship between spatial distribution of LULUC and land attributes. We reviewed these studies and listed the factors determining… Show more

“…The selection of driving forces for LULC changes varies for different studies (Geneletti, 2013;Mitsuda & Ito, 2011). Constraints are the criteria that restrict the expansion of built-up land use.…”

“…In terms of socioeconomic variables as part of vector , we build on the land-use change and deforestation literature (e.g., Lambin et al, 2003;Mitsuda and Ito, 2011). We use village characteristics such as population density, distance to road, share of households with formal land titles, and share of households using certain types of technologies such as mineral fertilizers.…”

“…The transformation of human activities in turn, exerts further impact on land use change (Mitsuda and Ito, 2011). During the past decades, China has undergone intense transformation within the globalized context-that is, economic transformation from centrally-controlled economy to market-oriented economy, social transformation from a closed and traditional society to an open and modernized industrial and urban society (Li, 2011a).…”
