Mountainous agriculture supports 15% of the global population, but its sustainability is facing challenges with the social transition. Honghe Hani Rice Terrace System (HHRTS), China, a double world‐level heritage, performs strong resilience to challenges. Available studies on HHRTS examines its sustainability from some perspectives but lack a systemic elaboration on its sustainable mechanism. This study extensively examines the literature on HHRTS and offers a comprehensive analysis of its sustainability. The findings suggest that mountainous agricultural sustainability depends on the support from relatively enough water and land resources and diverse employment based on these resources (economic sustainability), the environmental stability based on reasonable landscape structure, rich biodiversity and ecological farming methods (environmental sustainability), and social stability based on the well‐developing social structure, efficient management system, and relevant cultural restraint and guidance (social sustainability) as well as the dynamic interaction among the three dimensions. Among them, traditional knowledge and cultures play a positive role in maintaining the stability of terraced landscapes, but their role is weakening with industrialization and urbanization. This study provides a systemic explanation of a dynamic evolution mechanism that the economic and social factors drive local people to maintain a mountainous agricultural system from the agricultural society to the industrial society based on the theory of planned behavior. This study also provides abundant local knowledge, experiences, and an analytical framework for reconstructing a sustainable mountainous agricultural system in the socio‐economic transformation stage.

A systematic review of the trends in ecological science in the megabiodiverse Peru: Research gaps and future directions

Peru is a megabiodiverse country that is experiencing a considerable amount of anthropogenic change which is risking its ecosystems. Ecological science may provide the answers on how to cope with change by exploring new ways of sustainably using ecosystems. Here we review the current state and trends of ecological studies using a database search aiming to answer these questions: (i) who has been studying Peruvian ecosystems and how impactful was that research? (ii) what are the most studied political and ecological regions in the country? (iii) what are the most studied taxa? (iv) what are the most studied variables? and (v) what are the most studied topics and their relation with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)? To answer these questions, we conducted a systematic review using the Scopus database (1974–2022) and found 465 articles that conducted ecological research in Peru. We found a vast and increasing diversity of journals and authors publishing research on Peru's ecosystems, with an important participation of Peruvian scientists, especially in the last 15 years. The Amazonian regions of the country were most studied, with some political and ecological regions almost assessed, such as Huancavelica, Ayacucho, Apurimac and Tacna and the pacific tropical forest, paramo and palm tree savanna, respectively. Most studies dealt with single species, primarily animals, and secondly plants. Species composition and/or distribution was the main variable of study and conservation was the main topic. Life on Land (SDG 15) was more represented than other SDGs (58.4% of articles), leaving several others almost unstudied. Overall, we found that ecological research on Peruvian ecosystems is biased to certain regions, taxa and topics. This represents important opportunities for new projects, research collaborations and alignment to global sustainability agendas for more meaningful knowledge production, especially considering the significant increase in research output seen in the last 15 years.

ResumenPerú es un país megabiodiverso que está experimentando una cantidad considerable de cambios antropogénicos que ponen en riesgo sus ecosistemas. La ciencia ecológica puede aportar respuestas sobre cómo afrontar el cambio explorando nuevas formas de utilizar los ecosistemas de forma sostenible. Aquí revisamos el estado actual y las tendencias de los estudios ecológicos mediante una búsqueda en bases de datos con el objetivo de responder a las siguientes preguntas: (i) ¿quién ha estudiado los ecosistemas peruanos y qué impacto ha tenido esa investigación? (ii) ¿cuáles son las regiones políticas y ecológicas más estudiadas en el país? (iii) ¿cuáles son los taxa más estudiados? (iv) ¿cuáles son las variables más estudiadas? y (v) ¿cuáles son los temas más estudiados y su relación con los Objetivos de Desarrollo Sostenible (ODS)? Para responder a estas preguntas, realizamos una revisión sistemática utilizando la base de datos Scopus (1974–2022) y encontramos 465 artículos de investigaciones sobre ecología en Perú. Encontramos una amplia y creciente diversidad de revistas y autores que publican investigaciones sobre los ecosistemas del Perú, con una importante participación de científicos peruanos, especialmente en los últimos 15 años. Las regiones amazónicas del país fueron las más estudiadas, siendo algunas regiones políticas y ecológicas casi no evaluadas, como Huancavelica, Ayacucho, Apurímac y Tacna y el bosque tropical del pacífico, el páramo y la sabana de palmeras, respectivamente. La mayoría de los estudios se centraron en una sola especie, principalmente animales, y en segundo lugar plantas. La composición y/o distribución de especies fue la principal variable de estudio y la conservación fue el tema principal. La Vida de ecosistemas terrestres (ODS 15) estuvo más representada que otros ODS (58,4% de los artículos), quedando varios otros casi sin estudiar. En general, encontramos que la investigación ecológica sobre los ecosistemas peruanos está sesgada a ciertas regiones, taxa y temas. Esto representa importantes oportunidades para nuevos proyectos, colaboraciones de investigación y alineamiento con las agendas globales de sostenibilidad para una producción de conocimiento más significativa, especialmente considerando el significativo incremento en los resultados de investigación visto en los últimos 15 años.
