In spite of the many definitions on SSS that could traced through the literature, the geographic criterion seems to be the most commonly utilised (Douet & Cappuccilli, 2011).…”

Some authors have observed that there is a blatant contradiction between the EU position of expecting that the market should provide and take the risk of providing the seaway infrastructure while tending to ignore that competing roadways and railway infrastructures are subsidised by member states and by EU grant aid such as TEN-T (Douet and Cappuccilli, 2011). There need to be at least two conditions in place for feasible short sea services: road congestion sufficiently severe to increase unreliability of land transport delivery times, and environmental savings sufficient that customers are willing to pay for them (Brooks and Frost, 2004).…”

Potential freight distribution improvements using motorways of the sea

“…Measures encouraging carriers to adopt S3A and S3B strategies (lowest transportation costs) with measures such: -Promoting bigger road carriers (either the company's size or cooperation among carriers); -Easing the international cooperation among carriers from different port hinterlands and even having one carrier managing the entire supply chain, both the road and the maritime transportation, as long as it is not a monopoly. Unfortunately, few EC measures directly pursue a better cooperation between shipping companies and carriers or among the carriers themselves as a mean to increase the attractiveness and competitiveness of SSS chains (Douet and Cappuccilli, 2011).…”
