Materials selection in manufacturing process is an important stage and should be performed in parallel with selection of manufacturing process. In automotive industry, production of green automotive component could utilize the natural sources such as plant fibres. In recent years, several multi-criteria decision-making (MCDM) techniques are suggested to choose the best materials for particular application. Materials selection tools for natural fibre composites are studied from past researchers with the summary of the advantage and disadvantages. In addition, new optimization approach in materials selection by using statistical analysis such as multiple linear regression (MLR), response surface methodology (RSM) and Taguchi method (TM) is proposed in this study. The proposed method could evaluate the criteria or attribute in materials selection precisely by analyse the relationship of the parameters, goodness of fit, correlation, analysis of variance (ANOVA), determination of coefficient and the significant criteria in to the desired goal of the design problem.

A b s t r a c t. An understanding of the aerodynamic and biophysical properties of barley malt is necessary for the appropriate design of equipment for the handling, shipping, dehydration, grading, sorting and warehousing of this strategic crop. Malting is a complex biotechnological process that includes steeping; germination and finally, the dehydration of cereal grains under controlled temperature and humidity conditions. In this investigation, the biophysical properties of barley malt were predicted using two models of artificial neural networks as well as response surface methodology. Stepping time and germination time were selected as the independent variables and 1 000 kernel weight, kernel density and terminal velocity were selected as the dependent variables (responses). The obtained outcomes showed that the artificial neural network model, with a logarithmic sigmoid activation function, presents more precise results than the response surface model in the prediction of the aerodynamic and biophysical properties of produced barley malt. This model presented the best result with 8 nodes in the hidden layer and significant correlation coefficient values of 0.783, 0.767 and 0.991 were obtained for responses one thousand kernel weight, kernel density, and terminal velocity, respectively. The outcomes indicated that this novel technique could be successfully applied in quantitative and qualitative monitoring within the malting process.

Problem statement: Most Nickel based Hastelloy C-276 is a difficult-to-machine material because of its low thermal diffusive property and high strength at high temperature. Machinability consideration of nickel based Hastelloy C-276 in turning operations has been carried out using ceramic inserts under dry conditions. Approach: This study described a modification approach applied to a fuzzy logic based model for predicting cutting force where the machining parameters for cutting speed ranges, feed rate, depth of cut and approach angle are not overlapping. For this study, data were selected depending on the design of experiments. Response surface methodology was applied to predict the cutting force and to examine the fuzzy logic based model. Results: The modification approach fuzzy logic based model produced the cutting force data providing good correlation with response surface data. In this situation the cutting force data were superimposed and results were adjusted according to their own ranges. Conclusion: A review of literatures on optimization techniques revealed that there were, in particular, successful industrial applications of design of experiment-based approaches for optimal settings of process variables.
