A review of research on the dry season mesoscale meteorology of northern Australia

Abstract: Research on the structure and dynamics of a range of dry-season meteorological phenomena that occur around the Gulf of Carpenteria and parts of the arid interior of Australia is reviewed. These include: undular bores; sea breeze circulations; continental cold fronts in the tropics and subtropics; dry lines; and heat lows or heat troughs. The research was initiated by an expedition mounted in 1979 to gather data on the "Morning Glory", a spectacular cloud formation that occurs in the Gulf of Carpentaria region.… Show more

“…Perhaps the most spectacular type of cloud line associated with low‐level convergence occurring in the early hours is known as the “Morning Glory” (MG). MG is an undular bore often resulting from the collision of sea breeze and fronts (Goler and Reeder, 2004; Smith and Reeder, 2014). Recently, MG's have also been observed in northwest Australia (Birch and Reeder, 2013) and the Arabian Sea (Birch et al ., 2014b).…”

“…Bores are generally accompanied also by an increase in wind speed and wind speed variability, and often by a change in wind direction (e.g. Smith and Reeder, ). Unlike other mesoscale disturbances such sea breezes, cold fronts or thunderstorm gust fronts, idealized bores are not associated with changes in temperature and humidity.…”

“…The cloud lines associated with bores in this region are known as Morning Glories . (For details see the reviews by Smith (), Reeder and Smith (), and Smith and Reeder () and the references therein.) One study of particular relevance is that by Nudelman et al (), who, using one year of surface observations, constructed a climatology of pressure jumps in the Gulf of Carpentaria region.…”

“…The majority of these disturbances are generated in the evening over Cape York Peninsula and move southwestwards during the night and early morning. A recent review of the Morning Glory and related phenomena is given by Smith and Reeder ().…”
