A Review of Recent Technological Advances in the Brightening of High‐Yield Pulps

Abstract: Peroxide brightening/bleaching is an important unit operation for pulp and paper mills producing value‐added paper grades containing bleached mechanical pulps. In this paper, a number of process innovations have been discussed. They include: hydrosulphite assisted chelation process, the so‐called Qy process; DTPA spray; PN2process; PMprocess; Mg(OH)2‐based peroxide process. It will be shown that these processes can improve the peroxide brightening/bleaching processes in terms of (1) decreasing the production… Show more

“…The different stabilizers tested were mainly made of silica (Na2SiO3, V141, V268, and V287) except the poly-R-hydroxyacrylic acid. V268 and V287 contained EDTA, stabilizer well-known (19). According to the information found in the literature, co-stabilizers used with Na2SiO3 were urea, magnesium sulfate (MgSO4, 7H2O), dimethylenetriaminepentaacetic acid (DTPA), and sodium nitrate (NaNO3).…”

“…Recently, however, the use of magnesium hydroxide has increased. Its advantages include lower generation of COD, higher light scattering coefficient and no need for stabilizers compared to when sodium hydroxide is used (Johnson et al 2002, Leduc et al 2008, Ni 2005, Ni and He 2010. One important difference is that magnesium hydroxide is not fully dissolved and thus is added as slurry.…”

“…Polyvinylpyrrolidone maleic acid-styrene or propenes, co-polymers of butadiene-maleic acid, and grafted polymers are examples of polymeric stabilizers that have been reported in the literature. Hydroxyacrylate in peroxide bleaching has been reported to be an effective stabilizer for peroxide bleaching (Ni 2005;Wurorimaa et al 2006). The results show that silicate and PHAS have the highest peroxide stabilizing efficiency in terms of brightness and residual peroxide (Hamalainen et al 2007).…”
