A review of recent advancements in soft and flexible robots for medical applications

Abstract: Background: Soft and flexible robots for medical applications are needed to change their flexibility over a wide range to perform tasks adequately. The mechanism and theory of flexibility has been a scientific issue and is of interest to the community. Methods: Recent advancements of bionics, flexible actuation, sensing, and intelligent control algorithms as well as tunable stiffness have been referenced when soft and flexible robots are developed. The benefits and limitations of these relevant studies and how… Show more

“…Robots in hospitals are designed to be operated by medical technicians, medical doctors, and staff without engineering knowledge and troubleshooting skills. Therefore, the designers always need to ensure simple architecture, easy handling and quick maintenance for long-term usage of such machines [23]. Medical service robots help patients with prostheses, orthoses, hearing aids, and visual prostheses and thus require easy maintenance procedures [24].…”

“…It will also provide a great platform which makes communication between upstream and downstream players of the acupuncture industry more pragmatic and effective by new products of acupuncture [ 125 , 126 ]. Last but not least, soft and flexible robots for medical applications are needed to change their flexibility over a wide range to perform tasks adequately [ 127 ], so as to acupuncture robot. Those technologies include a spatially resolved soft sensor for biomechanics and robotic haptic capability which may lead to better interaction between patients and the robot [ 128 ]; also, the use of self-disclosure and forward lean by a healthcare robot can increase human engagement and attentional behaviors [ 129 ].…”

“…This dependencies make the cobot flexible, but in a limited scale. Recently advanced robots are more adaptive and reliable than previous ones, but they are less flexible in terms of multi-domain expertness [32]. Both robot and cobot are less flexible in the case of performance in a diverse domain.…”
