A Review of Processes for Removing Antibiotics from Breeding Wastewater

Abstract: Antibiotic pollution has become an increasingly serious issue due to the extensive application of antibiotics, their resistance to removal, and the harmful effects on aquatic environments and humans. Breeding wastewater is one of the most important sources of antibiotics in the aquatic environment because of the undeveloped treatment systems in breeding farms. It is imperative to establish an effective antibiotic removal process for breeding wastewater. This paper reviews the treatment methods used to remove a… Show more

“…13 Existing wastewater treatment methods including traditional and biological methods to remove dyes and pharmaceuticals are inefficient, due to the persistent nature and nonbiodegradability of these contaminants. 14,15 Therefore, novel wastewater treatment technologies and methods utilizing novel materials are highly sought aer by the water sector for the removal of toxic chemicals in an eco-friendly, fast, and sustainable manner. 16,17 Highly efficient and low cost wastewater purifying technologies would also make a vast difference to developing nations where highly contaminated water sources are known to exist, but these countries are unable to afford advanced technologies.…”

“…It is believed that around 40–90% of the prescribed antibiotic dose (depending on the class of pharmaceutical) is excreted as a parent compound in the active form in the feces and urine, and when it finally reaches the environment it causes soil, water, and plant contamination [ 19 , 20 , 21 ]. The use of excessive doses of antibiotics in livestock farming can pollute agro-ecosystems through either the application of contaminated manure as fertilizer in agriculture, or the irrigation of farms with wastewater [ 22 , 23 ]. Another source of concern comprises the improper disposal of leftover, expired, or unused pharmaceuticals which are released into sewage systems [ 24 ].…”

“…Given the inefficiency of conventional drinking water treatment technologies towards antibiotics [8][9][10], advanced treatment technologies, such as ozone oxidation [11], activated carbon adsorption [12], advanced oxidation technology [13] and membrane technology [14], have been employed. Due to the favorable separation performance, dispensing with chemicals and continuous operation, membrane technology has attracted considerable attention [15]. Although membrane filtration (such as nanofiltration and reverse osmosis technology) could exclude more than 99% of ciprofloxacin and levofloxacin in treated water [16,17], the application was limited by low flux, high operating pressure and membrane fouling [18].…”
