A review of pressure transient analysis in reservoirs with natural fractures, vugs and/or caves

Abstract: A review of the pressure transient analysis of flow in reservoirs having natural fractures, vugs and/or caves is presented to provide an insight into how much knowledge has been acquired about this phenomenon and to highlight the gaps still open for further research. A comparison-based approach is adopted which involved the review of works by several authors and identifying the limiting assumptions, model restrictions and applicability. Pressure transient analysis provides information to aid the identification… Show more

“…However, only several wells may be selected for testing every year in each reservoir due to their extraordinary high price, complex test process, and high requirements for test wells. Pressure transient analysis is one of the desirable choices to evaluate reservoir characteristics and well performance, including reservoir pressure, formation permeability, skin factor, and fracture properties, based on the bottom-hole pressure data recorded by an electronic pressure gauge in a more environmentally friendly and economical way. …”

“…This work intends to study the compromise between the accuracy of DFM and the convenience of equivalent continuum model. We focus on two-phase flow in fractured porous media, and discuss the extension to a more general case, namely fractured vuggy porous media, which has gained much attention in recent years (Yan et al, 2019;Mohammed et al, 2021;Xu et al, 2022).…”

“…Pressure-transient analysis (PTA) method has become an efficiency reservoir engineering tool for Inverting fracture and reservoir properties [7]. Source function theory is one of the key theories of PTA for MFHWs, which has an obvious advantage in flexibly characterizing the fracture geometry by developing different line and surface source function [8][9][10].…”
