A Review of Plant-based Diets to Prevent and Treat Heart Failure

Abstract: Evidence supporting the role of nutrition in heart failure (HF) incidence and severity is growing. A comprehensive search of online databases was conducted using relevant keywords to identify human studies including diet and HF. Several plant-based diets have consistently been associated with decreased HF incidence and severity, notably the Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH) and Mediterranean diets. Several other plant-based dietary patterns, including low-fat diets and the rice diet, also show pro… Show more

“…90,91 In addition, a high-fiber diet has been reported to prevent the development of HF and effectively improve cardiac remodeling. 92 Kerley et al 93 found that for HF patients, a plant-based diet rich in fruits, vegetables, beans and whole wheat might be beneficial; the role of nuts, dairy products, and poultry is controversial; yet red or processed meat, eggs, and refined carbohydrates seem to be harmful.…”

“…Furthermore, it seems important to investigate if specific types of fruit and vegetables are more protective than others by investigating mechanisms of action. To do that a food diary and ideally blood samples would be required in order to analyse nutritional biomarkers of intake (44) . Future research should also aim at developing and evaluating interventions which will increase the intake of fruit and vegetables in the population, and especially among men.…”

“…Other important risk factors for AF include heart failure and coronary artery disease (CAD) . Plant‐based diets may beneficially affect both entities and have been shown to be able to halt and even reverse CAD . The Lifestyle Heart Trial published by Ornish and colleagues found that more than 80% of patients diagnosed with heart disease who followed a plant‐based diet (lifestyle‐)program had some level of regression of atherosclerosis and 91% had a reduction in the frequency of angina episodes .…”

“…Heart failure is associated with high rates of morbidity and mortality and, above that, one of the most important risk factors for incident AF . There is interventional and observational evidence that a plant‐based diet may decrease the incidence and severity of heart failure . More recently, several case reports on plant‐based diets as a potential therapeutic approach in the treatment of heart failure have been published .…”
