The vertical particle velocity profiles in a full-column cylindrical conical spouted bed, with or without a draft tube, are measured using a fibre optic probe system. The profiles have different characteristics for a draft tube spouted bed (DTSB) than for a conventional spouted bed (CSB). The spout of a CSB consists of a central flow where particle velocities fit exponential distributions, and a boundary layer where particle velocities are nearly uniform. The spout of a DTSB has no boundary layer and its radial particle velocity profiles are approximately linear. The particle velocities in the spout of a DTSB increase when superficial gas velocity increases, draft tube diameter decreases, or when entrainment height decreases. A kinematic model has been used to simulate the granular flow in the annulus of a CSB and DTSB, and they are compared with the experiments. The particle velocities in the annulus of a DTSB are much lower than that of a CSB. Their radial profiles are also different with a CSB. The dependence of particle velocities in the annulus of a DTSB on superficial gas velocity, draft tube diameter, and entrainment height are also discussed. One concludes that the draft tube diameter and entrainment height are two key factors for the solid circulation rate of a DTSB.

The importance of providing safe and effective delayed-and extended-release oral formulations that can replace products requiring multiple administrations has been continually cited as an area in need of improvement for pharmaceutical companies. Such controlled release challenges become especially critical when they must be adapted for paediatrics, those suffering from dysphagia, or patients with specific dosage administration limitations. More often than not, lack of palatability and taste-masking compound this formulation challenge. Many particulate approaches show promise, but can be fraught with broad particle size distributions, initial drug burst, poor drug entrapment efficiency, low drug loading, and limited scalability. Here, we summarize the key factors that drive formulation development of format-flexible controlled-release oral powders, and the manufacturing aspects involved with some of the foremost marketed products, including next-generation singlestep layered powder manufacturing (below). Tablets are sometimes administered extemporaneously by crushing the dosage form and mixing with food or drink. Spouting of non‐spherical particles in conical‐cylindrical spouted bed

Experiments on the spouting of non-spherical particles in a conical-cylindrical spouted bed, with an inside diameter of 200 mm and a conical base of 60°, were carried out. The minimum spouting status of six kinds of non-spherical particles, the equi-volume sphere diameter ranges from 1.9 to 6.2 mm and the sphericity ranges from 0.73 to 0.95, were tested and compared with two spherical particles. It was found that the changes of minimum spouting velocity with initial bed height and spout gas inlet diameter were similar to the spouting of spherical particles in conventional spouted beds, while decrease in particle sphericity would lead to an increase in the minimum spouting velocity. The tested minimum spouting velocities were well represented by the MathurÀGishler equation of U ms , however a more satisfied prediction could be achieved for non-spherical particles when replacing d p in MathurÀGishler equation with a modified term w À0.5 d v .
