A Review of Over 100 Polymer Gel Injection Well Conformance Treatments in Argentina and Venezuela: Design, Field Implementation, and Evaluation

Abstract: During the last 15 years, polymer gels have become an accepted technology for improving volumetric sweep efficiency in heterogeneous waterfloods. Water injected subsequent to the gel treatment ideally enters previously unswept zones with significant mobile oil saturation. Results from several field projects in four hydrocarbon basins in Argentina and Venezuela are described based on the application of two available polymer gel technologies: Marcit and Unogel. The types of reservoirs and reser… Show more

“…The entangled structure leads to a resistance to the flow of the solution [i.e., an increase in solution viscosity (Cates and Candau 1990)]. It is also important to note that the power-law dependence of viscosity on the concentration for PAM solution is in agreement with previous research concentrated on polymer solutions (Colby et al 1991, Onogi et al 1967). …”

“…Adapted from Kazemi (2019) to control the mobility of the injected water, whereas the polymer gel is mainly used for conformance control in situations where there is the presence of a very high permeability contrast in the reservoir (Sorbie 1991;Abdulbaki et al 2014). Another distinction is the addition of a crosslinker which enables the polymer gel to form polymer systems that are efficient in plugging high permeability zones and creating a long-lasting permeability reduction which in turn will lead to an increased flow resistance, fluid diversion and displacing the oil out of any unswept regions in the reservoir (Sorbie and Seright 1992;Speight 2013;Abdulbaki et al 2014;Smith et al 2000;Norman et al 2006a).…”

“…In this study, these gels are depicted as organically-crosslinked-polyacrylamides bulk gels (OCAP-BGs). An example of this specialized chemistry is the UNOGEL technology developed by Union Oil Company of California (UNOCAL) which can be applied at temperature ranges of 200 to 300°F (Norman et al 2006).…”
