A Review of Innovations in Rhegmatogenous Retinal Detachment Surgical Techniques

Abstract: Rhegmatogenous retinal detachment (RRD) requires surgical intervention for its repair. There are variable techniques used for this purpose, and they are all being continuously refined. In this review, we detail the recent innovations in surgical management of RRD and proliferative vitreoretinopathy (PVR).

“…Rhegmatogenous retinal detachment (RRD) refers to the detachment of the retinal neuroepithelial fiber layer from the retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) layer caused by the positioning of the vitreous body underneath the retinal neuroepithelial layer (1)(2)(3). The vitreous body may cause retinal tearing and the resulting tension may separate the retina from the RPE (4,5).…”

“…1 To reattach the detached retina and prevent further detachment, various treatments can be performed, including vitrectomy, scleral buckling, a combination of the two, pneumatic retinopexy, laser coagulation, or cryocoagulation. 2,3 However, even after successful anatomic reattachment, the functional results show a wide range of visual outcomes. Poor visual acuity, permanent functional damage, persistent metamorphopsia, and color vision defects can remain after surgery, especially in cases with macular involvement.…”
