A review of incorporating Nd:YAG laser cleaning principal in automotive industry

Abstract: Laser cleaning has been identified as an ideal technology to replace conventional chemical techniques in the motorcar coating removal process to maintain the sustainability of our environment. This is due to the unique characteristics of this cleaning technique, such as being versatile, precise, controllable, lack of waste generation, and environmental friendly process. This laser technique can remove the coating layers without using chemical products and prevents the metal substrate surfaces from defect. This… Show more

“…The roughness measurements on all surfaces showed great uncertainty. However, the formation of a significant HAZ is to be expected with the use of a Nd:YAG laser [ 31 ]. As previously reported for a similar solid-state, nanosecond laser, the HAZ can reach a size of up to tens of micrometers [ 32 ].…”

“…Laser ablation of paints is a complex process that is influenced by some basic factors. They are in complex relationships with each other and both the specific influence of each factor and the complex influence of the main factors must be studied [4], [20], [25 -27].…”

“…The substrate below the coating that is targeted for removal is protected from damage by keeping the laser energy density below the damage threshold. The laser ablation process is shown schematically in Figure 1 [23], [20]. In the publications of a number of authors the process of laser ablation of paint from metal surfaces is considered and researched.…”

“…The associate editor coordinating the review of this manuscript and approving it for publication was Utku Kose. the laser cleaning includes the dry cleaning [5] and the steam cleaning [6]. The former eliminates the reminders by changing the physical states of particles on the surface of workpiece and conquering their adhesive forces; while the latter removes the reminders by gasifying the injected surface liquid which can take away the redundant particles.…”
