A Review of Hybrid Cauliflower Development

Abstract: Cauliflower is an important vegetable crop which belongs to the family Brassicaceae and is grown in many countries like India, China, Italy, Europe, America, etc. It is grown for its highly suppressed 'prefloral fleshy apical meristem' branches called "curd." It is a cross-pollinated crop. There are different groups based on their characteristics. Multiple pollination mechanisms, e.g., self-incompatibility and male sterility, not only encourages cross-pollination but also found useful in the commercial hybrid … Show more

“…Besides good combining ability, the parental lines should possess good commercial trait for their successful utilization in the development of F 1 hybrids (Sharma et al 2004). Thus, testing of agronomic potential and combining ability of the CMS lines was essential before using these lines in heterosis breeding.…”

“…So far, majority of cruciferous hybrid cultivars have been developed by using SI system (Watanabe and Hinata 1999). However, SI system has several disadvantages like, possibility of sibs in the hybrids and multiplication of SI parents through tedious bud pollination or treatment by enhanced concentration of CO 2 and NaCl spray (Jirik 1985;Kucera 1990;Sharma et al 2004). In case of snowball cauliflower, self incompatibility system is very weak or not present at all (Watts 1963;Nieuwhof 1963).…”

“…India is the second major cauliflower producing country after China and contributes 32 percent in area and 36 percent in the world production share (FAO, 2015). Apart from India and China, the other major producers of cauliflower are France, Italy, and the United Kingdom (Sharma et al, 2005).…”
