A Review of Emerging Tear Proteomics Research on the Ocular Surface in Ocular Allergy

Abstract: Ocular allergy is an immunoglobulin E-mediated Type I hypersensitivity reaction localised to the ocular surface and surrounding tissues. Primary signs and symptoms of ocular allergy include itching, redness, irritation and inflammation. Eye-rubbing caused by itching has been shown to alter ocular surface protein concentrations in conditions linked to ocular allergy such as keratoconus. In keratoconus, the cornea begins to thin and sag over time, leading to progressive vision loss and blindness in severe condit… Show more

“…Also, serum albumin and α-defensin were found to be upregulated in OA patients [ 62 , 63 ]. In a literature study, the authors reported conflicting results about tear concentration of ZAG and lipocalin-1 in OA patients [ 64 , 65 ]. The explanation may be due to demographic factors or differences between the analysis techniques, but more research is warranted to determine the concrete biomarkers and their role in OA [ 66 ].…”

“…A proteómica e glicómica do fluido lacrimal têm vindo a ser estudadas como potenciais biomarcadores que permitam diferenciar as várias entidades dentro do espetro da alergia ocular. Alguns dos estudos já realizados demonstraram diferenças no perfil proteómico que poderão também estar associadas à gravidade da doença (36)(37)(38).…”

“…In contrast to accessibility of skin biopsy samples used to identify AD biomarkers, difficulties in obtaining ocular samples and insufficient analytical techniques to analyze ultra-low amount of protein/ RNA samples initially impeded omics studies on ocular allergy. Aydin et al [30] outlined current approaches to identify noninvasive biomarkers of ocular allergy using tear proteomics.…”
