A review of embryonic mortality in cattle

Abstract: Embryonic mortality, strictly interpreted, should refer to fertility losses during the embryonic period, i.e. the period extending from conception to completion of the stage of differentiation which, in the cow, occurs at approximately 45 days (Committee on Reproductive Nomenclature, 1972). However, many authors have included under this term, fertilization failure, as well as death after fertilization. Since the present review was written for presentation within the framework of a symposium on reproductive eff… Show more

“…Suppression of PGF 2α secretion and maintenance of the corpus luteum are obligatory steps for establishment of pregnancy in cows, and failures in this process can cause the loss of up to 40% of the pregnancies (Ayalon, 1978;Maurer and Chenault, 1983;Thatcher et al, 1994). Reducing PGF 2α secretion through the feeding of PUFAs could improve fertility by reducing embryonic losses caused by defective suppression of PGF 2α secretion during early pregnancy.…”

“…During periods of dietary mineral insufficiencies, essential minerals will be cannibalized from body tissues to support milk production, which ultimately affects the quality and quantity of milk as well as reproduction [6,7]. [8] Demonstrated that supplemental metal amino acid chelates (AACs) were more bioavailable than inorganic metal salts (IOMs) and resulted in improved reproductive performance.…”

“…The number of services per conception is a variable that results from a well-done heat verification, a wellconducted and successful insemination, a good fertilization rate and a low early embryonic death rate (Ayalon, 1978). The number of services per conception obtained in this experiment was relatively high, since a S/C value of 2.0 is considered normal or acceptable.…”
