A Review of Embedded Systems Education in the Arduino Age: Lessons Learned and Future Directions

Abstract: Abstract-In this paper, the subject of embedded systems education in the Arduino age is examined. Arduino is an open-source microcontroller platform that has been widely popular in the past decade among hobbyists and academics. Arduino is increasingly being adopted in courses that span different disciplines in schools and universities. As a result, numerous papers are being published every year in different engineering education conferences and journals reporting the integration of Arduino in teaching. In this… Show more

“…Remote laboratories are a fundamental tool for the education of embedded systems, allowing access to experimentation with the latest devices without the need for a continuous update of traditional hands-on laboratories. The Arduino platform is considered by experts to be the perfect tool for approaching the development of embedded systems [33], [34]. Despite the low cost of development systems based on this platform, having a remote laboratory provides the educator with an approachable tool that offers total abstraction of the hardware and facilitates access to the software development cycle required by the technology [35].…”

“…Microcontrollers such as Arduino (1) are widely applied in many fields, from the academe to industry. (2)(3)(4)(5)(6) Many researchers have used Arduino as a microcontroller in their research. (7,8) Arduino is produced in various types, and each type or a combination of various types can be selected to support a particular experiment, as explained by Louis, in whose paper various Arduino boards were described as well as their implementation.…”
