A Review of Different Solar Still for Augmenting Fresh Water Yield

Abstract: Due to the greater growth of population and industrial developments especially from the early 20th century, people living in remote villages suffer with shortage of drinking water. People living in urban and rural areas depend on surface and ground water sources, where these sources are majorly polluted by industrial waste. The use of reverse osmosis technique and other conventional technique appears to be a costlier method and requires a very large land mass. An economical method of converting the saline wate… Show more

“…Figure 1 shows the schematic diagram of a simple single slope, single basin type solar still with its components. Solar radiations entering through the transparent glazing (glass) is absorbed [4] by the glazing (5%), water (5%) and absorber plate (90%). The heat absorbed by saline or the brackish water and the absorber plate, in turn, evaporates, leaving the impurities behind.…”

“…Other studies were based on improving the productivity of the single slope by several simple and cheap methods . Several theoretical and experimental studies in the literature show that the geometric shape itself of the distiller also influences efficiency . As the increase in the water temperature of the basin raises the productivity many studies are based on this effect, for that, they use dispute materials immersed in the water, some use storage metallic materials, and others use chemicals or natural storage materials .…”
