A review of cancer immunotherapy toxicity

Abstract: Cancer immunotherapies, including checkpoint inhibitors and adoptive cell therapy, manipulate the immune system to recognize and attack cancer cells. These therapies have the potential to induce durable responses in multiple solid and hematologic malignancies and thus have transformed treatment algorithms for numerous tumor types. Cancer immunotherapies lead to unique toxicity profiles distinct from the toxicities of other cancer therapies, depending on their mechanism of action. These toxicities often require… Show more

“…ARDS induced by cytokine storm is reported to be the main reason for death of SARS-COV-2-infected patients (18). It is possible that in this setting, immunotherapy induces the release of a large amount of cytokines, which can be toxic to normal cells, including lung epithelial cells (19)(20)(21), and therefore lead to a more severe illness. However, in this study the number of patients with immunotherapy was too small; further research with a large case population needs to be conducted in the future.…”

“…Immune‐related colitis is being recognized as one of the most common adverse events, with severity ranging from mild to life‐threatening. The main clinical abnormalities observed are nonspecific, including anemia, increased serum C‐reactive protein, and low serum albumin levels.…”
