A review of bioceramics-based dental restorative materials

Abstract: Currently, much has been published related to conventional resin-based composites and adhesives; however, little information is available about bioceramics-based restorative materials. The aim was to structure this topic into its component parts and to highlight the translational research that has been conducted up to the present time. A literature search was done from indexed journals up to September 2017. The main search terms used were based on dental resin-based composites, dental adhesives along with bioa… Show more

“…In addition to conventional materials, bioactive materials have been used in the dental field for their beneficial properties 8) . Incorporation of bioactive particles in conventional sealers can provide the same desired effect of the bioactive materials 9) . These materials can increase the sealing ability by closely adapting to root dentin 10) and can provide a biological response at the material-dentin interface.…”

“…which is one of the components of ACTIVA, is responsible for etching of tooth structure during material application. (15) It is considered a week acid to perform changes in smear layer to reach micromechanical bonding and this might explain this result.…”

“…(20,26) ACITVA Bioactive Restorative has the ability of fluoride release. (15,27) Release of fluoride might cause inhibition of active metalloproteinases (28) , thus reducing the enzymatic degradation at the bonding interface. Also, possible diffusion of calcium and phosphate ions through permeable hybrid layers might precipitate and crystallize in complex calcium-phosphates and inhibit MMPs through the formation of a Ca-PO/MMP complex.…”

“…Another proposed strategy to enhance the performance of composites is to enable remineralizing ability 5,9) . The addition of calcium phosphate (CaP) fillers encouraged the release of calcium and phosphate ions that enable the precipitation of mineral apatite on the surface of composites [10][11][12] . The composites containing CaP also promoted remineralization of demineralized dentin 13) .…”
