A review of artificial intelligence applications in shallow foundations

Abstract: Geotechnical engineering deals with materials (e.g. soil and rock) that, by their very nature, exhibit varied and uncertain behavior because of the imprecise physical processes associated with the formation of these materials. Modeling the behavior of such materials in geotechnical engineering applications is complex and sometimes beyond the ability of most traditional forms of physically based engineering methods. Artificial intelligence (AI) is becoming more popular and particularly amenable to modeling the … Show more

“…The human brain solves many problems that are difficult to solve using current information processing technologies. Studies have been performed to analyze and model the functional factors of the human brain that entail excellent thinking ability, memory, problem analysis, and solving ability [ 46 , 51 ]. Machine learning is a technology through which a computer learns from accumulated data, and it is one of the artificial intelligence technologies developed in the 1980s.…”

“…For example, consider the visual process, which in fact is a kind of information processing [37,38]. The brain can easily handle the visual perception process at a time of 100-200 ms [39,40]. However, the ability to detect much simpler images for conventional computers is much lower [41,42].…”

“…A general review has been made by Lu et al (2012) to examine various artificial intelligence (AI) algorithms in solving civil engineering issues. The stochastic nature of soil behavior in geotechnical engineering has also attracted the significant use of AI techniques, where review studies have been conducted on both shallow foundations (Shahin, 2014) and pile foundations (Shahin, 2016). Following Adeli’s (2001) study, a review of the recent applications of ANNs on civil infrastructure has been performed by Amezquita-Sanchez et al (2016), where several topics have been covered, including structural system identification, structural health monitoring, structural vibration control, structural design and optimization, prediction applications, construction engineering, and geotechnical engineering.…”
