A review of agent‐based modeling of climate‐energy policy

Abstract: Agent‐based models (ABMs) have recently seen much application to the field of climate mitigation policies. They offer a more realistic description of micro behavior than traditional climate policy models by allowing for agent heterogeneity, bounded rationality and nonmarket interactions over social networks. This enables the analysis of a broader spectrum of policies. Here, we review 61 ABM studies addressing climate‐energy policy aimed at emissions reduction, product and technology diffusion, and energy conse… Show more

“…Agent-based modelling is one technique to overcome restrictive assumptions of traditional models and to comprehensively incorporate relevant boundedly-rational and socially-interactive behaviours as well as heterogeneity in the context of ETR. These models have seen considerable application to climate policy (Castro et al, 2020), but not been systematically used to answer questions about a DD of an ETR. In future work we intend to elaborate some of the ideas exposed here along these lines.…”

“…And the requirements of modeling in the service of decision making would provide feedback that encourages theory to engage with decisions of great consequence and urgency. 40,130 A special challenge will be to build cumulative knowledge by better integration of insights from public and elite surveys, survey-based experiments, quantitative and qualitative analysis of previous successes and failures in promoting and implementing initiatives, and theoretical analyses. For example, surveys and survey-based experiments can provide substantial insights into public acceptability of various types of initiatives and thus help guide initiative design.…”
