A review and comparative analysis on energy transition in major industrialized countries

Abstract: Summary Due to the gradual depletion of fossil energy and the climate change, many industrialized countries are pursuing a sustainable energy transition, however they choose different pathways. There are such issues on the process of energy transition as the high renewable energy cost and the increase of carbon emissions. In order to ensure the smooth process of energy transition, governments need to draw energy development experience from each other to jointly promote the global energy transition. At the begi… Show more

“…For these investments, the return is not immediately realized, and must increase with the investment to a certain level before a positive return is achieved [ 86 ]. This also illustrates that a natural threshold is formed during the early stages of energy transition due to the high cost of renewable energy and increased carbon emissions [ 87 ]. This suggests that the energy transition is not solely related to the energy endowment and policies [ 84 ].…”

“…The increasingly serious environmental pollution leading to climate change has highlighted the need for renewable energy resources. 1 Hydrogen production from water splitting is considered one of the most profitable and sustainable energy resources in terms of cost and efficiency as fossil fuels alternatives. Several newly fabricated materials and developed technologies have been developed to obtain hydrogen from the decomposition of water through photolysis, electrolysis, thermolysis, and biological treatment techniques.…”

“…Energy production systems should shift towards decarbonization in the coming decades if global warming is to be kept below 1.5°C and if adaptation to planetary limits is to be achieved, [17]. Energy transition means technological and institutional transformations related to energy systems [18][19][20][21]. Therefore, an in-depth analysis of the characteristics of energy consumption is a prerequisite for determining the trajectories of these transformations [18].…”

“…The various assumptions in the literature on understanding electricity consumption highlight the difference in the characteristics, challenges and possible futures of the electricity sector in developed and developing countries, especially in the least-developed countries [20]. With a stagnant demographic growth rate, a fully electrified population, and a high economic level, electricity consumption has not only stabilized, but decreases have even been observed due to the application of energy demand management strategies.…”
