“…Additionally, no study reported non-binary gender information and reports of racial/ethnic identity were omitted from 7 of the 12 studies included in our sample. The practice of demographic underreporting is a substantial challenge in the field of mindfulness research (and psychological research more broadly), with important implications for health inequities 119 . Future researchers should prioritize responsible reporting and recruitment practices to address such disparities 119 , 120 .…”

“…These “Western” formulated programs have gained popularity in the East as the mindfulness movement penetrates globally in the last decade or so, but no one knows for sure if these MBPs are equally effective when practiced in a different culture. Even within the United States, a recent systematic review of 94 randomized controlled trials (RCTs) revealed a lack of demographic diversity in samples skewed toward white, highly educated, middle-aged females (Eichel et al, 2021 ). This bias in demographics should be kept in mind before one can conclude the universality of the effect of mindfulness when applied to different cultures and demographic groups.…”

“…In a review of 69 randomized controlled trials of MBIs, 79% of participants in 56 articles identi ed as White (Waldron et al, 2018). Another review of 94 trials of MBSR or mindfulness-based cognitive therapy found that 89% of the total participant population (n=4,030 total) were White (Eichel et al, 2021). Thus, disparities in mindfulness practice might be rooted in underrepresentation of racial/ethnic minorities in basic mindfulness research.…”
