A retrospective study regarding the method of delivery of adolescents in a Romanian Hospital

Abstract: Adolescent pregnancies are associated with a high number of risks for the newborn and mother. Hence, an increased number of emergency caesarean extractions are performed in this group of patients. “…The literature demonstrates controversial results related to the particularities of pregnancy evolution and birth in the adolescent population. Some studies report higher percentages of C-sections [ 41 , 42 , 43 ], some report similar C-section rates compared to adult pregnancies [ 44 , 45 , 46 ], and some studies report lower percentages of adolescent C-section birth [ 47 , 48 ]. As depicted in many previous studies, we observed a statistically significantly lower number of C-sections performed for various indications in the pregnant adolescent group when compared with pregnant women between 20 and 24 years old ( p -value less than 0.01).…”

“…Multiple studies evaluated the mode of delivery among adolescent patients, but the results vary and may be contradictory depending on demographic characteristics [7,45,50,51]. Most reports demonstrate that cesarean section in developed countries is less frequent in patients under 18 years [7,45], while in developing countries the rate of cesarean section is higher in adult and adolescent patients, representing almost one-third of all surgeries [52,53].…”

A study analyzing 343 patients aged between 12 and 17 showed that half required cesarean section [50]. Another study found a higher cesarean rate at <15 years of age (28.1%) compared to 23% at 16-17 years [2].…”

“…In their original study entitled ‘A retrospective study regarding the method of delivery of adolescents in a Romanian Hospital’, Uzunov et al ( 20 ) aimed to analyze the pregnancy-related conditions, the way of delivery and the neonatal outcome of all the patients who delivered in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology of University Emergency Hospital in Bucharest, a tertiary unit in Romania over a period of 5 years, on a group of 686 patients. As regards their results, 464 of the 686 patients did not undergo any medical visits during pregnancy.…”
