A Retrospective Comparison of Bovine Pericardium and Polytetrafluoroethylene Patch for Closure of Ventricular Septal Defects

Abstract: This retrospective study compared the immediate post-operative (first month) and mid-term (up to 5 years post-operation) results of 22 patients with isolated ventricular septal defects who underwent surgical correction with bovine pericardium with 57 similar patients who received a polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) patch. There were no cases of early (in the first month) mortality in either group and the 3-month post-operative echocardiographical studies showed no evidence of calcification or aneurysm formation a… Show more

“…19 The tarsorrhaphy was absolutely necessary to protect the patch with the E-PRP clot, although it was partial only to control the evolution of the corneal wound healing. The lack of additional administration of topical therapies postoperatively may be controversial, but the patients were not completely without treatment, the pericardium membrane was moistened in 1% cefuroxime, and they were receiving oral ciprofloxacin and nonsteroidal antiinflammatory medication and tobramycin ointment on their eyelid borders.…”

“…kolay bulunabilmesi, göreceli olarak ucuz olması ve kullanımının kolay olmasına rağmen gözeneklerindeki çeşitlilik, tromboemboli, hemoliz, endokarditis, yama dikiş hattında fibrozis sonucu büzülme, kalsifikasyon gibi istenmeyen komplikasyonlar bildirilmiştir. [1,2,[4][5][6][7][8] Gluteraldehit ile muamele edilmiş sığır perikardı yamalar ise, kalp kapağı, kondüit olarak kardiyak cerrahideki çeşitli kullanım yerlerindeki sonuçlarının mükemmele yakın olması, esnekliği, dayanıklılığı, fibrozis nedeni ile büzülme özelliğinin az olmasından dolayı GPBP'nin intrakardiyak defekt onarımında ideal yama olduğu düşünülmektedir. [8][9][10][11][12][13][14][15] Bu yama 0.5 mm kalınlıkta olmasına rağmen güvenilir dikiş olanağı sağlamakla [16] birlikte ameliyat esnasında karakteristik kullanım özelliklerine de sahiptir.…”

“…Nevertheless, it may have a high rejection rate and adhesion to surrounding tissues, be more allergic, and be associated with calculi formation in patients undergoing urologic or vascular surgeries [8,61]. In contrast, BP has been demonstrated to be associated with no evidence of calcification, infection, thromboembolic events, or failure in pediatrics undergoing cardiac surgeries [62,63]. Additionally, it is deemed an appropriate graft in infected tissues [62].…”
