A retrospective clinical, multi-center cross-sectional study to assess the severity and sequela of Noma/Cancrum oris in Ethiopia

Abstract: Introduction Noma is a disfiguring gangrenous disease of the orofacial tissue and predominantly affects malnourished children. The tissue gangrene or necrosis starts in the mouth and eventually spreads intra-orally with the destruction of soft and hard tissues. If not controlled, the natural course of the condition leads to a perforation through the skin of the face, creating a severe cosmetic and functional defect, which often affects the mid-facial structures. Furthermore, the course of the disease is fulmin… Show more

“…Survivors often endure severe facial deformities that impede essential functions such as eating, speaking, and social interaction, resulting in stigmatization and isolation. 17 Discrimination, limited educational opportunities, reduced job prospects, and social exclusion are common experiences for noma survivors, who frequently seek surgical rehabilitation after years of suffering and neglect. 18 However, accessing surgical treatment is a formidable challenge, as experienced surgical teams and appropriate facilities are scarce in affected regions.…”

“…The disease is rare in developed countries but is still not uncommon in many developing countries, especially in the noma belt region, which stretches from the west (Senegal) to the east (Ethiopia) of Africa. Noma is a devastating orofacial gangrene that affects the orofacial anatomic region and leaves victims with short- and long-term functional, aesthetic, and related psychosocial impairments [ 1 , 2 ]. Facial disfigurement has long been considered one of the most potentially distressing aspects of human anatomy, as the facial region is critical to self-concept, interpersonal relationships, and communication.…”

“…Noma is a devastating orofacial gangrene that leaves a victim with short and long-term functional, aesthetic, and associated psychosocial impairments [1]. However, the sequela of Noma has received less attention [2]. Nomainduced changes include skin induration, limited temporomandibular joint movement, and muscle involvement leading to a progressive reduction in the range of facial motion, particularly that of the mouth, which ultimately causes di culty in speech and mastication.…”
