There are over 650 million people in Africa who have no access to electricity; this is in sharp contrast to the continent's vast untapped renewable energy potential and due largely to the historical lack of investments in energy infrastructure. New investments in decentralised power generation within Sub-Saharan Africa play a progressively important role in increasing energy access and addressing the continent's electricity supply shortages. Tracking the performance of Sub-Saharan African countries along various socio-political and economic axes can spur the mobilisation of private, public and international sectors in investing in decentralised energy technologies. An increasing amount of high-resolution global spatial data are available, and used for various assessments. However, key multidimensional indicators are mainly still provided only at the national level. To this end, we present a comprehensive and consistent analysis of the attractiveness for decentralised photovoltaic technologies at an unprecedented level of detail using both high-resolution spatial data and national reports. We develop and build a new composite indicator that considers the interplay between social, political, environmental and financial factors at a granular regional level for Sub-Saharan Africa and embeds within it the importance of the local production costs at high-spatial resolution.

The electricity situation in Nigeria has become alarming, with the population increasing over the years, the supply of electricity has failed to reach the demand. With over 223 million residents in the country, 95 million people lack an adequate supply of electricity. 91% of the supply is allocated to the urban areas while 30% at most reaches the rural economy due to constraints in the electrical grid. This has caused overdependence on other sources of generation such as diesel generators, and other means of generation. Using these other sources of generation has contributed to the nation’s carbon footprint and global warming. This paper aims to study the impact of stand-alone microgrids and how they could curb the electricity deficit in Nigeria, there is also a brief background on renewable energy as it forms the foundation of microgrids. This paper concludes that though microgrids could mitigate global warming and curb the country’s electricity deficit, factors such as security and management are preventing the successful implementation of these means.

The commercial sector in Nigeria has been greatly hampered due to the poor availability of reliable electricity. In a 2014 World Bank report, nearly half of the firms doing business in Nigeria identified electricity as a major constraint, with over a quarter of them listing electricity as their biggest obstacle. The business losses due to electrical outages have been significant, with losses averaging about 16% of annual sales. The lack of access to reliable electricity is one of the biggest challenges to economic growth in Nigeria. This paper proposes a means of powering the commercial sector in Nigeria using urban swarm electrification. It outlines a conceptual framework for using a distributed network made up of grid-connected home solar PV systems as a viable option for providing the commercial sector with more reliable access to electricity. It further addresses the policy implications for the commercial sector with the enablement of more electrification options, implications that include strong economic impact, as well as the expansion and creation of new industries.
