A retrospective analysis of clinicopathological and prognostic characteristics of ovarian tumors in the State of Espírito Santo, Brazil

Abstract: BackgroundOvarian cancer is sixth most common cancer among women and the leading cause of death in women with gynecological malignancies. Despite the great impact ovarian cancer has on women's health and its great impact in public economy, Brazil still lacks valuable information concerning epidemiological aspects of this diseaseMethodsWe've compiled clinical data of all ovarian tumors registered at the two public hospitals of reference (1997 - 2007), such as: patients' age at diagnosis, tumor histological type… Show more

“…Although Kaplan-Meier analysis indicated that patients carrying the variant homozygous C/C genotype had shorter PFS and OS than those carrying the T allele (T/T + T/C genotype) for SNP rs16949649T/C, the Cox proportional hazard model analysis suggested that this relationship was only retained in the OS of patients when adjusted by clinical factors. The histological cell type, stage, and residual tumor size affect the survival of ovarian cancer patients [20][21][22]. The current study also confirmed that the age at diagnosis, FIGO stage, grade and residual tumor size were closely related to the survival time of patients with epithelial ovarian cancer.…”

“…1 The Brazilian National Institute of Cancer describes epithelial ovarian cancer as a high mortality gynecological cancer. 2 According to the IARC Globocan 2012 data, the incidence of ovarian cancer is 3.6% behind breast, colorectal, cervix, lung, uterine and stomach cancer. 1 At Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital based on hospital audit data, ovarian tumors are the most common type of genital malignancy and also the most common to undergo surgery.…”
